What is Paleo Diet?
The Paleo Diet, also known as the “Cavemen’s Diet”, is one of the most nutritious diets that is trending these days. Followers of this diet consume fresh fruits and vegetables, seeds, nuts, fish and seafood. According to nutritionists, it reduces the risk of intestinal cancer by up to 50%.
Paleo diet drew the attention of the public when Loren Cordain wrote the book “The Paleo Diet: Lose Weight and Get Healthy by Eating the Food You Were Designed to Eat”
Paleo Diet is inspired by the lifestyle of prehistoric people who only fed on vegetables, fruits, berries, eggs and fish. Eating natural, unprocessed, high-nutrient foods is the main principle that guides this diet.
Dairy products, bread, pasta, fast food, alcoholic beverages, coffee have no place in Paleo diet. In other words, everything that did not exist in the prehistoric men’s menu is excluded from Paleo diet.
Megan Fox and Matthew McConaughey are among the stars who have managed to lose weight with this diet. Paleo Diet has some similarities to another famous diet called Atkins diet, which involves giving up carbohydrates.
The most important aspect of both diets is that they try to avoid modern foods such as bread, potatoes, pasta and rice, but instead rely on high protein intake from vegetables, fruits, nuts, lean meats, fish and eggs.
Paleo Green Smoothies – Recipes
As green smoothies use natural unprocessed ingredients such as leafy green vegetables, fresh fruits, nuts, seeds and vegetable milks, these smoothies are ideal for Paleo diet. Most of the recipes of these Paleo green smoothies which I am going to present are spinach-based. If, however, you do not like the taste of spinach or if you prefer a smoothie of a color other than green, do not hesitate to change one or more ingredients.
These Paleo green smoothies are also gluten free, and totally natural. You can prepare them in less than 10 minutes. So, there is no excuse for not having them for breakfast!
#1 Green Smoothie with Spinach and Cucumber
Don’t be scared of the spinach taste, there is also pineapple or mango in this recipe to bring sweetness. I admit that cucumber is often used in salads, but it can make your green smoothies delicious. Spinach gives an attractive green color to the smoothie apart from providing a good amount of fiber.
- 2 big handfuls spinach leaves
- Half seedless cucumber
- 1/2 cup pineapple or mango
- 1 Orange, peeled, seeded
- 1/2 lime, peeled, seeded
- 1/4-1/2 cup cold water
Add all the ingredients in a blender and mix at high speed for about a minute. You may add more water or ice cubes if you want a thin consistency.
#2 Kiwi Avocado smoothie recipe
A green smoothie is perfect to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. I add a little apple juice to avoid having a smoothie that is too thick.
- 1 Avocado
- 4 kiwis
- 2 small ripe bananas
- 50 ml of apple juice
- 1 tsp lemon juice
Peel all the fruit and avocado, cut into pieces, add water and little lemon juice. Put everything in the blender with apple juice and blend on High for about 40 to 60 seconds.
#3 Orange Pineapple Spinach Smoothie
- A handful of fresh spinach shoots
- 1/2 cup pineapple chunks
- 1 apple cut into cubes
- Juice of 1 yellow lemon
- 250 ml of cold water
Remove the skin and heart from the pineapple. Remove its flesh and cut into small cubes. Wash, seed and cut apple, without peeling, into pieces. Mix the young spinach sprouts, pineapple, apple, water and lemon juice in a blender (adding water if you want a more liquid texture). Pour into glass and serve fresh.
#4 Banana Pineapple Smoothie with Coconut Milk
For those who do not like green vegetables, here is a healthy and delicious smoothie using fresh fruits and coconut milk.
- 1 Banana
- 1.5 cup of fresh or frozen pineapple
- 1 orange, peeled
- Juice from a lime
- 4 cubes of ice
- 1 tablespoon of ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 teaspoons of turmeric
- 1/2 cup of coconut milk
- 1 cup of water
Add all ingredients to the blender and mix until homogeneous. Add water to reach the desired consistency.
